<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">The
final piece for TAOP has to be in the form of a magazine article telling a
photographic story. I have decided to show the WWI and WWII defences that
circle the coast of Fife, most of which are in very poor repair and can only be
found if you are actively looking for them, they are certainly not signposted
like most historic monuments, although they probably should be. These are
coastal remains that fascinate me, as they are so rarely visited except by the
local graffiti artists, and were so important in the defence of Britain.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">I
spent some time deciding on whether to use monochrome or colour, trying using
all of one or the other and ended using a mix to show the feelings the
buildings evoked in me. Many were taken in poor weather, a few in bright
sunshine. Most were taken using a Panasonic Lumix G1.The images were taken in
RAW, processed via Lightroom 3, and the pages put together in Photoshop
Elements 8 and 11. The font for all the pages except the title page is Ariel.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The hardest part of this project was to
cut down the number of image used from hundreds of possible ones. Initially I
had several more on some of the pages, but the pages looked cluttered, and the
additional images did not add anything to the story. I also tried a variety of
fonts for the text, but they made reading it more difficult and proved an
unnecessary complication.</span><span style="font-family: Arial;"></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">This
shows the tank blocks that were made in their thousands and lined the coast.
They are hardly visible today in most places, and many have been moved.
Monochrome was used to emphasise the graphic nature of the cubes. The font is
'Day Poster Black', which was then outlined with a white stoke in Photoshop Elements.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">The
castles along the seacoast make dramatic images, especially when seen on a
stormy day. I choose to concentrate on the skies to show the often threatening
nature of the weather in Scotland in winter. This was emphasised further in
monochrome and by the distance and use of a wide angle lens in the lower image.
The upper image was taken from directly below the tower to show the effect it
has of looming over you, even though mostly in ruins.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial;">The
WWI and WWII defences are much less dramatic, and often much less visible. Here
the lower image shows how the bunkers sits on the hill, and uses the hill as
protection, unlike the castles which stand above the landscape. A wide angle
lens was used to show the bunker within the background. Walking backwards to get
further away would have had me walking off the edge of a cliff. The colour

use of colour shows how different the bunkers look in different seasons, but

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">The
view inside the bunker seems much larger because of the relatively wide-angled
lens which increased the apparent way the walls converge, even when only a
short length of the side walls is visible. It also increases the depth of field
so all is in focus.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The monochrome
emphasises the wrecked and deserted inside. The figure stress out the window as
many must have done in the past. In the bottom image a wide-angle view was used
to show as much of the view as possible. Colour shows the contrast between the
concrete and nature, especially now the site is almost overrun with gorse.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial;">Colour
was chosen here to show the deserted, rust streaked, nature of the hangers. A
similar image in monochrome also worked well. The single bunker is a very bleak
view, perched right on the cliff top. The use of a long telephoto lens has
increased the visual bulk of the bunker and made it stand out. A similar
picture using a standard lens from the same shot would have given a very small
and less impressive image.</span></div>

the defences stand out from the landscape of the nature reserve, and are being
slowly destroyed by nature. Colour shows the contrast of man-made against
nature. The steel pillbox is virtually rusted away. A wide-angle lens was used
from close up to both show detail and exaggerate the shape of the gun platform.

The final piece is now complete for sending in.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The topic has remained the Fife defences, concentrating on those from WWI and WWII. These are coastal remains that fascinate me, as they are so rarely visited except by the local graffiti artists, and were so important in the defence of Britain.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I ended using a mix of monochrome and colour to show the feelings they evoked in me. Many were taken in poor weather, a few in bright sunshine. Most were taken using a Panasonic Lumix G1.The images were taken in RAW, processed via Lightroom 3, and the pages put together in Photoshop Elements 8. The font for all the pages except the title page is Ariel.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This shows the tank blocks that were made in their thousands and lined the coast. They are hardly visible today in most places, and many have been moved. Monochrome was used to emphasise the graphic nature of the cubes. The font is 'Day Poster Black', which was then outlined with a white stoke in Elements.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The castles along the seacoast make dramatic images, especially when seen on a stormy day. I choose to concentrate on the skies to show the often threatening nature of the weather in Scotland in winter. This was emphasised further in monochrome.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The later defences are much less dramatic, and often much less visible. Here the lower image shows how the bunkers sits on the hill, and uses the hill as protection, unlike the castles which stand above the landscape. The colour detail image shows the overgrowth of ivy and closed over window. </div>

The colour images here show the scale of the massive gun emplacements, and how desolate they are.<br />

The use of colour shows how different the bunkers look in different seasons, but they are still overwhelmed by the new (relative to the age of the bunkers) tree growth.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The graffiti, from inside the last bunker in the line, was taken with a slow speed rather than using flash, as the flash distorted the colours and made it look too 'new'. An alternative would have been to use flash and alter the colours in Lightroom.</div>

The landscape image shows a line of blocks looking over the coast, here the alien nature of the blocks is emphasised by the grey against the blue, but in most cases the blocks are being slowly broken down by the elements and lichen.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Colour was chosen here to show the deserted, rust streaked, nature of the hangers. A similar image in monochrome also worked well but did not fit so well in the sequence when looking from the previous page (7) to this one.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I returned to monochrome for the final image to show my emotion when faced with the lack of care given to these monuments of war. This image also has the only human figure, a hardly visible person sitting waiting in army dress.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The hardest part of this project was to cut down the number of image used from hundreds of possible ones. Initially I had several more on some of the pages, but the pages looked cluttered, and the additional images did not add anything to the story. I also tried using all monochrome and all colour, but in the end decided a mixture told the story better and was more interesting to look at. I also tried a variety of fonts for the text, but they made reading it more difficult and proved an unnecessary complication.</div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03031788727113832799noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6143547815248282900.post-62951153037344405472012-05-23T20:46:00.000+01:002012-05-23T20:46:32.122+01:00Final Piece<div style="text-align: justify;">
The final piece for TAOP has to be in the form of a magazine article telling a photographic story. I have decided to show the WWI and WWII defences that circle the coast of Fife, most of which are in very poor repair and can only be found if you are actively looking for them, they are certainly not signposted like most historic monuments, although they probably should be.</div>

This shows what is needed, was taken on the spur of the moment when sitting hoping the rain would stop. Rethinking this assignment was an
interesting exercise. It was hard to think of different ways to show such an
iconic camera. All pictures were taken with my Panasonic G1, mainly with a 45mm
(90) prime lens. The exposure was metered by the camera.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
I have a single camera mounted
flash, which can be swivelled to bounce light and no other photographic
lighting so the still life shots were done with a variety of household lights
and then colour corrected in Lightroom3 where required. The monochrome image
was edited in Silver Efex pro 2. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
These images are different than
the previous set, and, I think, improved. There is a wider range of lighting
used and more techniques shown.</div>

After a period of about 6 months unavoidable pause in this piece of work I have now got back on track again. I haven't been totally stopped from learning as I have managed to visit several fascinating photographic exhibitions and art galleries, and also done some reading. The other thing I have managed is to increase my repertoire by taking some 'street photographs', and concentrating on monochrome.</div>

I did not

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Only
one image was needed - but the house opposite is having its roof
replaced before winter and another crash drew me outside to find this,
the concept her is rubbish, thrown away or old and worn out.<br />

Other concepts that are shown in magazines and on TV are: </div>
<ul style="text-align: justify;">
<li>wealth, poverty</li>
<li>taste - food or clothing</li>
<li>safety</li>
<li>space (or lack of space)</li>
<li>happiness</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
None of these are easy to photograph
directly - so symbols are required. Some come so familiar that the
symbol is enough to bring the concept to mind , a- castle =
protection. Some symbols give mixed messages and understanding depends
on the context. Fire can mean warmth or danger, very different meanings,
almost opposite in nature.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

In this exercise the idea was to show, in one image, rain. This sounds simple - but it isn't. The photo also needs to be original, and a 'good' photograph. I have tried several goes at it and am not yet entirely satisfied.</div>
<br />
<i>Attempt 1.</i><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This was taken in Edinburgh at Holyrood Palace while we were waiting for a break in the torrential rain. RAW edited in Lightroom 3, mono conversion in Silver Efex Pro, and some minor work in PSE8 (mostly removing a TV aerial).</div>
<i><br /></i><br />
<i>Attempt 2</i>.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
This was an attempt to show the raindrops bouncing up from the pavement. It was less than successful, although the paving certainly looks wet!<br />
<br />
<i>Attempt 3.</i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">After the Rain - ISO 80, f/2.7, 47mm efl, 1/500 sec</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
This was after a very heavy rainstorm and the clouds are still lowering overhead. I love the picture - but am not sure that it really shows rain, maybe storms, or light.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So far I am not happy that any of these really fulfill the brief, however, the other day I was sitting inside the office at work and the rain was pouring down the window and everything outside was given a rippled effect. I couldn't immediately get up and take a photo, but - maybe it could be replicated with a hose pipe. An experiment is required.</div>

I choose to illustrate a book cover, partly because my narrative story is about a person and their hobby, partly because I find still life setups challenging, both to make and also to light and photograph.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first challenge was to find an appropriate book, many of the books in our house are science fiction, and I struggled to think of a still life that would work. Eventually I remembered one of my favourite books of modern poetry - <b>Of Rowan and Pearl</b> - poems about rural Scotland.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i> 'these berries</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i> that flare out in bunches</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i> enamelled in sheerest red..'.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
( Margaret Gillies Brown)</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I set out by finding a rowan branch, they are full of berries at the moment, some seashells and strings of pearls. The arrangement went though many permutations, initially getting more complex, but I finally settled on a simple close up of the berries and pearls. I went though a slow process of setting up, photographing, checking images on the PC and then altering the arrangement. This meant I could leave the camera and lights in position and only change one variable at a time. I also carefully followed my checklist developed earlier, after assignment 4 feedback.</div>
<ul>
<li>think about what you are taking </li>
<ul>
<li><i>rowan and pearls</i> </li>
</ul>
<li>why are you taking it?</li>
<ul>
<li><i>for a book cover - therefore a portrait shot is likely to work better</i></li>
</ul>
<li>what detail are you concentrating on?</li>
<ul>
<li><i>the colour of the berries </i></li>
</ul>
<li>what light are you using?</li>
<ul>
<li><i>artificial , lit from a slight angle, at the level of the berries and reflected via a gold reflector </i></li>
</ul>
<li>shutter speed and aperture</li>
<ul>
<li><i>aperture chosen to get as much of the picture in focus as possible, shutter speed not important as using a tripod, and cable release. ISO 100 to minimise grain. </i></li>
</ul>
<li>focal point</li>
<ul>
<li><i>the point at the middle of the berries and the top of the pearls, manual focus used to get this spot on. </i></li>
</ul>
</ul>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmwtyKzcKfjXp7itmPiqX9LWXzPzMZCVvl0I7ZSfAA_xoZd0xB26FngadZWpwovAQ1fQdyYxHtjYsQYcS1rfZDfNHCDSMKYCXFmLCCFA9XFGRe3S5u4sD26-fAKHxtrHRWtDzrL6I_vcri/s1600/rowan+and+pearl+1_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmwtyKzcKfjXp7itmPiqX9LWXzPzMZCVvl0I7ZSfAA_xoZd0xB26FngadZWpwovAQ1fQdyYxHtjYsQYcS1rfZDfNHCDSMKYCXFmLCCFA9XFGRe3S5u4sD26-fAKHxtrHRWtDzrL6I_vcri/s400/rowan+and+pearl+1_.jpg" width="298" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">ISO 100, f/22, 90mm efl, 2.5 secs.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<ul>
<li>did it work?</li>
<ul>
<li><i>yes </i></li>
</ul>
<li>if so – why</li>
<ul>
<li><i>plenty of thought during the process!</i></li>
</ul>
<li>if not – why not</li>
<li>what settings did you use</li>
<ul>
<li><i>as above, slow shutter speed, and small aperture </i></li>
</ul>
<li>what lighting</li>
<ul>
<li><i>artificial - but moved the light around until it really shined on the pearls </i></li>
</ul>
<li>what post-processing</li>
<ul>
<li><i>minimal, RAW processed in Lightroom 2, slight sharpening and enhancement of the red colour, levels checked in PSE8</i></li>
<li><i> </i></li>
</ul>
</ul>
I then had some more fun making a book cover using the picture. I did try various more complicated layouts - but finally went for something simple. The title font is called 'Broken Ghost' and is available free online. The names are in 'Century'.</div>

The exhibition of sculptures and drawings by Tony Cragg at the Scottish Gallery of Modern Art is full of items that make me want to touch them. The surfaces look inviting, smooth and cool. They are made from metal, resin and wood, are sinuous and twisting. Tony Cragg says ' <i>I describe myself as a radical materialist......... sculpture ...is a study of the material world .... it permits a journey of discovery that gives us a glimpse at the myriad of forms as yet unseen.'</i> (Tony Cragg, Sculpture and Drawing,National Galleries of Scotland, 2011).</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Many look organic, or contain distorted faces that appear and disappear as you look from different angles. Others mimic strange jars or pieces of old machinery, but i found these less inviting.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5AURqQbShqNWVWisT9c57uOolgy1hQ35tijA10NCXdm1qv8q0nYZGRSArsb6RrF3Hx9DZIMcFXN5xyGv76lPePoUyVkMEYbL1lZt6aqdZKcm8FKxtP-rGeItYFkCHBcTGaGRNt5CNgPYe/s1600/P1010395.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5AURqQbShqNWVWisT9c57uOolgy1hQ35tijA10NCXdm1qv8q0nYZGRSArsb6RrF3Hx9DZIMcFXN5xyGv76lPePoUyVkMEYbL1lZt6aqdZKcm8FKxtP-rGeItYFkCHBcTGaGRNt5CNgPYe/s400/P1010395.jpg" width="318" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This one I found particularly striking and it reminded me of a recent visit to Doncaster Air Museum where many old planes were left outside waiting on someone to rescue them. The texture and the feel of this fuselage of a Canberra was similar and equally sculptural. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUokiN1GhurWVO5BtM9cIn8jwDZ1lOlDCZp_dh4qe971pCPOyM_dVD-DJd4HYrOCIWf0Oq9Q6sjtvRpzBJV_oX6TdagUV-5iUhsypiYCk1tWBOzrSQXJvIKyELOpNdSscxqa7wQAth4q52/s1600/_1190044.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUokiN1GhurWVO5BtM9cIn8jwDZ1lOlDCZp_dh4qe971pCPOyM_dVD-DJd4HYrOCIWf0Oq9Q6sjtvRpzBJV_oX6TdagUV-5iUhsypiYCk1tWBOzrSQXJvIKyELOpNdSscxqa7wQAth4q52/s400/_1190044.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Shapes, textures and patterns that are striking can be found in unusual places. Both exhibitions were impressive in different ways. A reminder to keep looking and not to make assumptions about relative value as a learning experience.</div>

The purpose of a symbol is to communicate meaning. (Wikipedia).</span><br />
<span style="color: #333333;">Symbols can be large, small, complex or simple – it does not matter as long as they act to represent the idea. Some are common (a red cross), others are very culture dependant (a red crescent). The meaning of symbols can change over time, and changes within populations, for instance, across generations.</span><br />

<i>Fundamentally, poverty is a denial of choices and opportunities, a
violation of human dignity. It means lack of basic capacity to
participate effectively in society. It means not having enough to feed
and clothe a family, not having a school or clinic to go to, not having
the land on which to grow one’s food or a job to earn one’s living, not
having access to credit. It means insecurity, powerlessness and
exclusion of individuals, households and communities. It means
susceptibility to violence, and it often implies living in marginal or
fragile environments, without access to clean water or sanitation. (United Nations)</i><br />

The sun was in and out constantly - usually in though. We eventually gave up and went home as tea needed to be cooked. Life frequently gets in the way!<br />
On the way home the sun suddenly broke though the clouds and illuminated the trees, which are just turning colour, with the most fabulous gold. The sky was stormy and the light was perfect - but - nowhere to stop safely, and and irritated motor cycle behind me so I couldn't even go slow to enjoy it. The next minute the sun went in for the rest of the day.<br />
<br />
So when I got home I decided to convert one of the earlier photos to one with colours reminiscent of the trees, and this is what I came up with:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgksGomjqrn2SPdKAMkKMdux8rGHaryuureO7Tj_wRlXIzDnrdt7mInS8Q-DvtbF-dupqnBfSYj3aLNs8WCM0kFmsx38S42dJcvSIsw7LGyX2G8iX2InTRmJdL3CKuSDI54zmLVxP7_rWw6/s1600/Carlingnose-2011Forth+Defences1200665+edited_edited-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgksGomjqrn2SPdKAMkKMdux8rGHaryuureO7Tj_wRlXIzDnrdt7mInS8Q-DvtbF-dupqnBfSYj3aLNs8WCM0kFmsx38S42dJcvSIsw7LGyX2G8iX2InTRmJdL3CKuSDI54zmLVxP7_rWw6/s400/Carlingnose-2011Forth+Defences1200665+edited_edited-1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
the original picture was much too blue (not sure why) so:<br />
<ul>
<li>RAW processed in Lightroom 2</li>
<li>sharpened using high pass filter in PSE8</li>
<li>extra layers made via the fractalius plug in with overlay and saturation blending modes</li>
</ul>
<br />
I then remembered coming home in similar stormy weather last week when the sun suddenly came out under the clouds for a few minutes - and this was the effect:<br />

This issue of photoworks is devoted to relatively unknown Japanese photographers and their work, much of which has been produced in the form of photobooks rather than as prints for a gallery. This means that much of it needs to be looked a in context and in order rather than as individual images. It is therefore inevitable, that as only a small selection of any of the whole books are shown, some of the impact will be lost.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have seen very little Japanese photography and am looking at it with an eye attuned to western culture which will effect the way I interpret the photos. I also became aware that I interpreted them differently than the reviewers, often in a more simplistic way. Next time I look at a book like this i think it is important to look at the images first – then read the review!. One picture where I had a markedly different instant understanding was in the work of Osama Wataya where the reviewer (Gordon MacDonald says <i>‘The most uncomfortable image……… is one of a man whose flesh seems to be melting from his body like wax’ (Gordon MacDonald, Photoworks 2009. p52. ).</i> This image shows me a man who, in spite of his problems, walks down the street with his head held high. This difference may be because I work with people with a disability on a daily basis. Unlike MacDonald this man did not make me think of the atomic bombs, although I agree that it does show immense suffering.</div>

The images that I would most like to see more of were by Ariko, a Japanese photographer, who has taken pictures of Iceland to create pictures that are calm, with a great sense of light and space. These images remind me of those by Dan Holdsworth ( seen earlier at the Baltic Gallery), which, although showing much more detail – have the same sense of light and calm.</div>

Overall, this edition of Photoworks, although dedicated to Japanese photography shows a wide variety of images, some beautiful and others disturbing. It is clear that a simple label of Japanese does not immediately give an expectation of one ‘type’ of image, any more than British or American would. It is an area I will need to explore further.</div>

Feeling rather flat at the present. Not a very good response to my last assignment. Pictures too similar and lighting also too similar, both comments fair, but I had tried to take them inside and under artificial light deliberately, this is always something I find hard.</div>
<div align="justify">
Wondering whether to start again completely – or to take some more and go outside (if it ever stops raining).</div>
<div align="justify">
Also need to use more explanations of what and how, I tend to put it in this blog, but still not in enough detail. Not sure how to do this bit, self reflection is not my strong point – so make a check list.</div>
before:<br />
<ul>
<li>think about what you are taking </li>
<li>why are you taking it?</li>
<li>what detail are you concentrating on?</li>
<li>what light are you using?</li>
<li>shutter speed and aperture</li>
<li>focal point</li>
</ul>
afterwards:<br />
<ul>
<li>did it work?</li>
<li>if so – why</li>
<li>if not – why not</li>
<li>what settings did you use</li>
<li>what lighting</li>
<li>what post-processing</li>
</ul>
This should help. Less and better is the aim.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03031788727113832799noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6143547815248282900.post-68384502927971208842011-09-16T21:05:00.000+01:002011-09-19T16:19:21.555+01:00Assignment 4: Applying Lighting Techniques<div style="text-align: justify;">
I spent a long tome considering possibilities for this assignment and eventually decided to photograph an old Rollei camera that my step-father used 40 or more years ago. This camera has personal meaning to me as watching him use it started me on taking photos, it has meaning as a piece of photographic history as a camera everyone recognises and it also has some very interesting detailing. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All the images were taken inside on backgrounds of card or black velvet. The lighting was supplied by a standard household bulb in a flexible table lamp.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All images were taken in RAW and processed using Lightroom 2 and Photoshop Elements 8. Monochrome conversion was via Silver Efex Pro 2.</div>

This possibly was not the easiest object to use for this set of images - but overall I am pleased with them. An object with a greater range of colours might have demonstrated the lighting effects better, but this was certainly an interesting exercise.</div>

This exercise should have been easy! I picked my spot and then ------ no sun. Every day that was a possibility for me (i.e. a weekend that I wasn't otherwise committed, wedding, work, family event) it either rained or was overcast.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Eventually I decided on another tack. This statue is of Andrew Carnegie. It is in our local park because he was born here and is our main local benefactor. I have taken lots of photos of it in different lights - so I went back over the last year and found some. They do not make up an entire day, and are not all at the same time of year, but they do show varying possibilities.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">1715 - against the sun</td></tr>

<br />
In the morning this statue is best seen from the front, in all his glory (plus seagulls usually). By lunchtime the sun has moved around and lights the side view, and shadows are cast across the front. This does tend to highlight the 3-dimensional nature of the statue, and you can see the texture in the stone well. In the evening the back is lit, so you can either take from that side, or you can often get a very impressive silhouette, and (if you are lucky) a fabulous sky.<br />
<br />
It is very important to consider time of day , and also time of year, when taking landscape images. You have no direct control over the direction of the light, and therefore the shadows at a given time, but watchful waiting, or indeed, returning another day either earlier or later may give you the image you want.</div>

The aim here is to use a still life together with a fixed light and various reflectors to show the effect of reflected light on altering the contrast and the shadow.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This exercise was done with a simple still life, a household reading lamp (60 watt) and various sheets of card. The f/stop and focal length were kept the same. All RAW images were processed in Lightroom 2, with the exposure as given by the camera, and the contrast set to +50.</div>

<br />
<br />
The difference between the last 3 images is subtle and much more visible with a larger image. They would probably be much more obvious with a stronger light , as much of the light will have 'diffused' naturally across the length of the set up (approx.2 metres). It would be worth repeating the exercise with everything much closer together or with a more powerful light source. The images with side lighting and contrast are much more interesting than the first one with the overhead light. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the images by Stieglitz and Weston shown as examples the shadow is essential to give definition to the faces, they would have been much less interesting without them.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Learning points:</i></div>
<ul>
<li>side lighting can be much more interesting than overhead</li>
<li>a household light bulb has limitations!</li>
<li>diffusing the light can give a softening of contrast, without loosing it altogether</li>
<li>home-made reflectors with kitchen foil do work</li>
<li>the distance between light, subject and reflector is important.</li>
</ul>

In retrospect this exercise would have been better if carried out using a lighter statue, possibly one with colour. In the full images (not made smaller for the web) the changes in light patterning are much more visible showing a wide range of possibilities.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Out of these my preferred image is the last one, although the first one shows most detail.</div>

While I had the flower pot in place I experimented with using the 'on camera' flash both directly and bouncing it of a multi-surface reflector, that gave a variety of possibilities, white, black, silver and gold. I also tried this using the AWB and the camera 'flash' white balance. None of the images have been altered in photoshop.</div>

As would be expected the gold reflector gives a much warmer image, and overall a very pleasant effect. The plants leaves are probably slightly too yellow but the pot is not over-exposed with a blown highlight, and the table is the correct colour.</div>

I did repeat all the variations with the camera's flash setting for white balance, but they were all unpleasantly yellow, and there was little difference visible using the various reflectors.</div>

In this instance I prefer the picture taken using the silver reflector, but I think the gold one is equally pleasing, just a less accurate colour rendition. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is certainly worth exploring further, especially when taking pictures of people using flash either inside or as an adjunct outside.</div>

This exercise involves look at the effect of a diffused on a harsh light and examining the difference. For this exercise I used a plant in a glass pot. The plant has a large number of this leaves that cast a detailed shadow, and the glass pot gives a bright reflection.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is the image without any diffusion to the light. The light source came from in front, slightly angled to my camera, as this gave the best shadow pattern. The shadows are harsh, and the glass pot throws a bright highlight. The shadows give a strongly 3-d look to the image.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here I used a diffuser in front of the light, the shadows have almost disappeared and have might softer edges and the lighting on the leaves is more even. The glass pot is still too bright. This image looks much 'flatter'.</div>

The only difference in settings is in the slightly longer exposure. Overall I prefer the second image with the diffuser, although I might have liked slightly more shadows of the leaves. The first image is too harsh and there is less detail in the leaves.</div>

I do not possess any photographic lighting equipment, this is partly because of cost and also because up to recently I have found no use for it. The main photographs I like to take are landscapes and flowers, so mostly outside and in the daytime.</div>
<div align="justify">
Up to very recently I did not even possess a flash gun and relied on the on-camera flash, although I preferred not to use any flash at all and made a lot of use of timed exposures.</div>
<div align="justify">
My first foray into photographic lighting has been to buy a flash gun for my camera. My camera does not appear to support syncing with a flash that is not attached to the hot shoe – although I may yet find a way around that limitation so I can use the flash from away from the camera. However, at present I am still experimenting with the use of the flash and bouncing the flash of a variety of surfaces to give variation to the light and to use it as a ‘fill’ flash.</div>
<div align="justify">
The exercises here have been carried out with a mixture of household lighting and the help of my son. he makes an excellent light stand! However the lights tends to be les bright than I might wish and also less focused. The new regulations for the type of obtainable light bulbs, (CFL’s using low power) are making the use of these lights less and less practical.</div>
<div align="justify">
I have enjoyed working with ‘still life’ type images for this course, and am starting to feel limited by the equipment I can access so may acquire some more lighting, the difficulty is in knowing exactly what is needed.<br />

Graham Clarke has written a very readable history of the development of photography and its genres. He initially talks about what a photograph actually is – writing with light, and how this gives us an ability to order and record nature. Once the initial development of photographic processes had begun with Daguerre and Fox-Talbot there was continuing development of both processes and cameras throughout the nineteenth century. Over 60 years this allowed the photograph to become ‘<i>one of the most accessible and accepted means of visual representation ……. the ultimate democratic art form’. (Clarke, The Photograph, 1997, p.18).</i></div>
<div align="justify">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify">
He goes on to describe how our understanding of a photograph is very dependant on its context, small or large, monochrome or coloured, and also the genre of the image<i>, ‘an ‘art’ photograph involves an entirely different set of assumptions from a documentary photograph’ (Clarke, The Photograph, 1997, p 10).</i> Photography also (by its very nature) fixes a moment in time and allows us to look back at the past.</div>
<div align="justify">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify">
Clarke then looks at how we ‘read’ a photograph. This is dependant on our own past experience and also on our assumptions about the meaning of the photograph. There are also different levels of meaning, the ‘denotative’, which is the literal meaning and the ‘connotative’ which is the underlying or implied meaning . Over time photography has gradually developed itself to a place where the images in themselves are important and can become <i>‘visual essays’ (p37).</i></div>
<div align="justify">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify">
In the nineteenth century photography often followed themes that had been used in painting, such as The Open Door by Fox Talbot which bears similarities to Dutch interiors, and many of todays genres, such as portraits and landscapes follow on from this. Photographs were understood because people were very aware of the visual language and subtexts associated with various types of paintings. I wonder if this is actually reversed nowadays – with many people much more familiar with photographs than with paintings. A further new development was <i>‘travel’ photography, which allowed people to see’ wondrous images of otherwise only imaging culture’ (Clarke, The Photograph, 1997,p49).</i></div>
<div align="justify">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify">
Landscape photography moves between two poles, <i>‘the basic elements of nature,( trees, flowers and so on) and change (light, water sky and the seasons)…………or pastoral scenes of a postcard culture.’ (Clarke, The Photograph, 1997, p 56).</i> In the USA much early photography was associated with the government expedition and surveys, but it often reflected a <i>‘sense of wonder’</i> and is associated with Transcendentalism where every detail is significant, and fixes a moment as part of time and space. American landscape photographers, from Watson to Ansel adams choose landscapes that are empty of people, <i>‘sublime and pure scenes….. a mysterious otherness’ (Clarke, The Photograph, 1997, p65.</i> British photographers tend to more follow the picturesque route, possibly because of the lack of grand landscapes that show no signs of human habitation. England is increasingly <i>‘cluttered… with space at a premium’</i> and this is often mirrored in the recent British photographers work such as Martin Parr.</div>
<div align="justify">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify">
Cities give a series of different possibilities to the photographer. One may use panoramic shots, look down from above or look up from below. Another possibility is street level images, which may be empty of people or be cluttered with items and invoke a threat of danger or violence. Photographers look at a variety of street form broad avenues (Steiglitz) to small alleys. As the century advanced cities were increasingly lacking in unity and fragmented and may become <i>‘an invisible, at times underground city , in which the sheer density of the human presence threatens to overwhelm the camera’ (Clarke, The Photograph, 1997, p 80).</i> Other photographers concentrate on the human figure to give meaning to the city (Hine and Arbus), Cities can be photographed both in daylight and after dark, where they may may show deep needs, and the underside of the city.(Brassai) In the end <i>‘the urban space is both insistent and unreadable….. a series of disparate elements… which remain impervious to the photographer’s attempts to capture it’ (Clarke, The Photograph, 1997, p97.</i></div>
<div align="justify">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify">
Portraits in photography can be problematic. The photographer tries to express the essence of the person in one image, and show personality. This is then filtered though a series of stereotypes that are dependant on the age and sex of both the photographer and the sitter There is often a clear difference between photographs of males and females, for instance in the work of Margaret Cameron which <i>‘reinforce the myth of male dominance and individuality’ (Clarke, The Photograph, 1997,p 105). T</i>here is also a marked difference between those who use studio’s and those who take portraits in context, or use the situation to define the person, such as August Sander. Sometimes, in the end, the photo is more about the image and what is says about society than about the person.</div>
<div align="justify">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify">
The body has become a ‘pervasive’ image in our society, but it can still cause controversy. Pornography has been present as photographic images from very early on in the development of the use of the camera,(and probably simply took over from pen and paper drawings). This continues as an issue, and the majority of image of the female nude are taken by men, and are often passive or submissive in nature. Pictures of the male nude tend to be represented differently even when overtly homo-erotic such as those by Mapplethorpe.</div>
<div align="justify">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify">
Documentary photography can be defined as images that <i>give 'a truthful and objective account… of what has happened…. a series of discrete images which speak of the complexities of human experience and disaster. (Clarke, The Photograph, 1997, p 145)</i> The camera has often been used to expose and bring to public attention things that would otherwise remain invisible. This can be done either in a way that acts to work overtly on the emotions of others (the Migrant Mother by Lange) or, sometimes, in a very neutral stance that is the more shocking when fully examined (Bergan-Belsen Concentration Camp by Rodger). War, and its aftermath, is frequently a subject for documentary photography but one must not forget the possibility of censorship even today. The other area that needs to be considered is the possibly lack of veracity of a photograph. This has always been an issue, however is much easier to perform now. At the end, one is dependant on the honesty of the photographer for the truthfulness of the image.</div>
<div align="justify">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify">
Clarke then continues on to discuss photography as ‘fine art’, where the content of the image is often subsumed to the impact of the image and can make very subtle images from basic materials of life. Her also talks about images that have been deliberately manipulated to reveal the meaning of the photographer.</div>
<div align="justify">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify">
Overall this is a fascinating introduction to the theory and history of photography. Some of the types of image he discusses are ones I have experimented with such as landscape and portraiture, but others need investigation especially the body, and also documentary work. </div>

However, I do not carry a tripod, and therefore many were taken at very high ISO settings, and hence grainy or at very slow shutter speeds , and blurred, or even both. I have a small gorilla-pod - its needs to live in my bag, next to my everyday camera!</div>
